What Are Primary Elections?

Primary elections are how political parties pick their candidates for the general election. In Maryland, you usually need to be registered with a party to vote in its primary. Some nonpartisan races let all voters participate.

For more comprehensive information on Maryland’s voting rules, deadlines, and how to register, visit the Maryland State Board of Elections Primary website.

Check Your Registration

It is important to check if you are registered to vote, even if you are confident that you have registered in the past. Voters are sometimes (though infrequently) unregistered for a variety of reasons (you didn’t respond to an inquiry, you were marked inactive, etc.). You should also double-check that your listed name, address, and party identification (if any) are correct. If you check your registration and find that you need to update your information, use UMBC’s All In Voter Registration Portal.

For residents of other states, you can use the Vote411 website to find the link for your state.
